Between Dreams 1986

A troubled young man discovers that everytime he falls asleep, he awakens farther and farther away from his home. He begins to fear for his life when a sinister old man leads him down a road where the lines between sleep and waking are blurred.

Shot in Super 8mm black and white Ektachrome film it is my 2nd semester of film school class project. This film was shot in the spring of 1986 (perfect kite flying weather).

I had just began my studies in Lucid Dreaming and Theology and wanted to do an abstract film that communicated these radical philosophies to the audience.

Goodbye Dreams

The original idea spawned from a series of nighttime kite flying adventures that my friends and I embarked on. There was a new office complex being built on the edge of our county. Everything beyond it was rural country and dense forest. They had cleared a huge field and planted grass. They had only started construction in the far back of the vast lot, so far that we couldn’t even see the new buildings. This left a massive green lawn hidden from the general public.

We would arrive there late at night and fly kites in the full moon light. It was a unique and stirring experience. I was inspired to think of ideas about meditation and out-of-body experiences.

One night we decided it would be our last adventure. We brought extra string, flew our kites as high as we could get them, and let them go in the night wind. They sailed away among the bright stars and glowing moon. It was a profound way of saying goodbye to those adventures. It was a metaphor for letting go of my youth and moving on to the responsibilities of adulthood, so it did have an effect on me.
